If you are a PPS member, you may use the form below to send your vote directly to the Secretary. Voting closes on 28th February. The prize will be presented at the AGM in March.

Vianna 2014

Asiago Awards
Isabel Vieira read in a Portuguese newspaper that a Portuguese stamp won an Asiago International Award for Philatelic Art this year.I couldn’t find an official site, not even in Italian, but stumbled upon an article in Linn’s Stamp News with full information on the 44th Asiago Awards, considered the “Oscars” of stamp design. The Portuguese stamp, above, by João Machado, and part of the 2013 International Year of Statistics set, won the tourism category. Confusingly, all Portuguese blogs and newspapers I found, probably citing the same source, say the award went to the €0.36 stamp, which in my view makes even less sense to be considered a tourism stamp.
The designer had already won three Asiago awards, in 2005 (tourism), 2007 (environment category) and 2010 (tourism). Portugal also won (ex aequo with Switzerland) the tourism category in 2011, with the funicular stamps by Eduardo Aires. CTT sources say that another Asiago award (tourism category again?) was won in 1977 with a Europa stamp.

Stamps and Holography
Image: Núcleo Filatélico Angra do Heroísmo Dr Hans Bjelkhagen mentioned to us his book “Holography and Philately“, which includes a Portuguese stamp:
“To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the first Portuguese stamp, Portugal issued a souvenir sheet on September 23, 2003 (No. 175) and also to commemorate Francisco de Borja Freire (1790-1869), the designer and engraver of the first Portuguese stamp issued in 1853. Four different souvenir sheets were issued of which one is a stamp with a hologram. The long stamp with the hologram on the souvenir sheet depicts Queen D. Maria II with the Portuguese Mint building in the background. Both Francisco de Borja Freire’s signature and the master tool (a 25 reis coin with the Queen’s profile) for embossing the first stamp are also featured on the sheet. The hologram stripe across the stamp within the souvenir sheet has six CTT Portuguese Post Authority Emblems, with the one on the left side being the first one used and the one on the right side the current symbol. […] The hologram was produced by INETI in Portugal in cooperation with IMPRENSA NACIONAL CASA DA MOEDA (INCM) – the Portuguese National Press and Mint which printed all four souvenir sheets.”

AGM 2014
PPS members will always be encouraged to attend the AGMs. Every 5 years the PPS holds an AGM in Portugal and these AGMs are very well attended. I was unable to attend this year, but in an email to PPS member Milind Kamat today I suggested that in the future there’s no reason why members can’t attend via Skype (video and audio). Obviously we want to attend in person, but realistically that’s not always possible. Skype would be the next best thing to being there. Food for thought.
