The auction has 100+ lots coming up for bidding, which are described in the catalogue. The images for all lots were scanned by the duo and are now available for viewing on our website. Note that some of the lots have multiple images associated with them. The description of such lots is marked in the catalogue with an asterisk sign (i.e. **) indicating availability of more than one image. Click on an image and then on the circled ‘i’ (in top right hand corner) to view the auction lot number corresponding to the image.

We are glad to inform the PPS members and of course the “regulars” regarding arrangements for AGM 2018’s week- end which will take place from Friday, March 9th, 2018 to Sunday March 11th, 2018 with the AGM itself at 10.00 a.m. on Saturday March 10th, 2018
The new venue this year will be the Warwick Hilton, Stratford Road, Warwick CV34 6RE, England, UK. It is on the A 429 just about 100 yards from the roundabout on the M 40. The centre of Warwick is 2 miles away and Stratford 6 miles. You can of course find further details on their website :www.hilton.com/warwick
The cost will be £ 85 per night per person, bed and breakfast single and £ 95 per couple for a double. Dinner is another £ 20 although on the Friday night, as last year, members will probably be visiting the Pastelaria Portuguesa at Coten End, Warwick (More at : www.pastelariaportuguesa.co.uk )
It would be appreciated if PPS members would let Mr. John Swan know as soon as possible – and in not less than three weeks – if they expect to attend. This need not be a final commitment at this stage but obviously the hotel would appreciate knowing approximately how many rooms we require.

Welcome to the PPS. The PPS was founded in 1962 to explore and promote the philately of Portugal and her former colonies. Membership has diversified over the years and we are an international society. We meet regularly, share a common interest and enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie that our philatelic interests bring. This website will become a portal to Portugal and colonies philately and we encourage inquiry from experts and beginners. I most sincerely apologise for breaking with a long-time tradition, but I regret that the planned-for auction later this month at the AGM in Porto will not now take place.
This year I have had increased mobility problems and this has necessitated a planned operation to free a nerve in my back which in turn has restricted my traveling.
I am planning to re-create the auction on-line in mid-year and will be contacting all those who have given me items to sell, to gain their approval for this. Notice will be given both in the magazine and on this website as and when a date is known.
I hope that the AGM is a massive success and hope to see everyone at Midpex in July.

PPS member John Dahl is selling his award-winning Nyassa collection. Details of the collection can be seen in the latest bulletin or in the online exhibit. The first part will be auctioned on 4th March. The lots (number 766 to 843) start on page 16 of the online list.
The Italian Association of Military Post Collectors has created a generic philately portal that includes links to hundreds of philatelic associations and societies (including the PPS), libraries, magazines, online exhibits, and much more. A very comprehensive resource.
PPS member John Dahl is selling his collection of Azores Postal History at Ateneu’s forthcoming 61st auction. The collection is documented in three articles he wrote for the PPS bulletin. Click on the image on the right to read them. Note that due to the file size it may take some time for pages to appear.
Isabel Vieira read in a Portuguese newspaper that a Portuguese stamp won an Asiago International Award for Philatelic Art this year.
I couldn’t find an official site, not even in Italian, but stumbled upon an article in Linn’s Stamp News with full information on the 44th Asiago Awards, considered the “Oscars” of stamp design. The Portuguese stamp, above, by João Machado, and part of the 2013 International Year of Statistics set, won the tourism category. Confusingly, all Portuguese blogs and newspapers I found, probably citing the same source, say the award went to the €0.36 stamp, which in my view makes even less sense to be considered a tourism stamp.
The designer had already won three Asiago awards, in 2005 (tourism), 2007 (environment category) and 2010 (tourism). Portugal also won (ex aequo with Switzerland) the tourism category in 2011, with the funicular stamps by Eduardo Aires. CTT sources say that another Asiago award (tourism category again?) was won in 1977 with a Europa stamp.
